I must stick to the fight when I’m hardest hit, It’s when things seem worst that I mustn’t quit. Give yourself something worth working towards and think these words: So, next time you are up until midnight studying or enduring a tough sport workout, imagine yourself facing the “victor’s cup” in the end. Some might think that this poem is just words, but words can be churned into thoughts and thoughts can inspire decisive actions and deeds that lead to success. You can never reach success without failure. It points out how closely related success and failure are. This creates a unique position because normally things are not compared to their opposites, but in this instance it makes the comparison even stronger and more meaningful. I like this part of the poem because it a very strong and unique metaphor comparing success to it’s opposite, failure. It is that glimpse of hope when everything seems hopeless. The second part of this excerpt (the silver tint of the clouds of doubt) is similar to the saying “the silver lining”. Also, just like inside out is the opposite of the original position, success is the opposite of failure. Failure does not mean that your attempt was totally flawed, but that you may have made a few minor miscalculations or missteps that made you come up short of success. The first part of this excerpt (Success is failure turned inside out) means that within every failure are lessons that must be learned to achieve success in future attempts at the same or other endeavors. My favorite line in this poem is “Success is failure turned inside out/the silver tint of the clouds of doubt”. By repeating just a few consonant sounds, the whole message is emphasized. I think that the alliteration serves as repetition of the author’s point of not quitting. This poem also contains quite a bit of alliteration in lines such as “life is queer with its Twists and Turns” and “So stick to the fight when you’re Hardest Hit”. The rhyming makes the poem sound hopeful and allows it to flow. The whole poem is about not quitting when life gets hard, and the rhyme scheme adds to the inspirational aspect of the poem. It contains a perfect rhyme scheme (AABBCC…etc) that serves to emphasize the imperfections of life. “Don’t Quit” has a very inspirational attitude and is very uplifting. This poem describes how life can beat you down but in order to succeed, you need to pick yourself up and try again. and you can never predict what will happen next. Life is like a roller coaster, with its twists and turns. The meaning of this poem is quite simple: don’t quit. This poem is hanging in the girl’s track locker room, and I know it inspires the track team everyday. The writer just penned these words and left them for all humanity to ponder things. The author received no fame, no fortune, and no credit. It could have been written with kids like us in mind. Sadly, no one knows for certain who wrote it, but the message is so simple it is profound to think about the impact that it has had on so many. This is a poem that has been inspiring Americans for many years. It might be after you’ve had a bad day, or after you get a bad grade in school, or during an intense sport work out. It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.Įverybody has those days where they are mesmerized by thoughts of giving up. So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit– When he might have captured the victor’s cup,Īnd he learned too late when the night slipped down,Īnd you never can tell how close you are, When he might have won had he stuck it out ĭon’t give up though the pace seems slow– When the funds are low and the debts are high,Īnd you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
